Ready to up your game?

Are you having trouble finding your own personal style? Or are you curious about why clothing off the rack never seems to fit you right? Do you want to learn how to mend your own clothes?

Seamstress Jess Shope offers gender-inclusive workshops on all of these topics, and more!

Jess Shope, a woman with short red hair and wearing a blue dress, stands at the front of a classroom. She is teaching a group of adult students. There is a projector screen at the front of the room.

FAQs

  • Jess’s workshops are ideal for medium-to-small groups, such as non-profit organizations, public and private schools, homeschool co-ops, churches, libraries, and community centers.

  • To host a workshop, you will need an indoor space with tables and a chair for each participant. As most presentations also include slides, you will also need a screen and projector, with an HDMI hookup. Having nametags for your participants is also encouraged!

All other materials needed for workshop activities (pens and paper, magazines, needles and thread, etc.) will be provided by Jess.

  • Workshops start at $100 an hour.

If you are interested in having Jess present at your organization but don’t currently have it in your budget, there are some creative options for finding funding. Grants may be available, or you can charge a modest admission fee with pre-registration ($10-20 per person, depending on the size of your event).

  • Jess is currently able to travel up to an hour from Lancaster City for workshops (which includes much of Lancaster, York, Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, Berks, and Chester counties).

  • Not at this time, but we’re working on it!

  • The workshops currently offered are best-suited for high school and adult ages (15 and up), but some the content can be adapted for a younger audience (middle school).

Jess has a B.A. in secondary education with three years of experience teaching at middle and high school levels. Copies of her PA State clearances are available upon request for organizations that work with minors.

  • Of course! Jess has a wide range of sewing experience, including quilting and quilt repair, designing and building theatre costumes, mending and alterations, embroidery, and crafts. If there’s a topic your group is interested in learning more about, just ask!

  • Here at Crimson Thread Sewing, we believe that fashion and sewing are for EVERYONE. Especially for our workshops on the topic of clothing (which is incredibly personal and has a long history of being highly gendered) Jess prioritizes using language that is gender-inclusive.

    • “Women” means all women, including transwomen.

    • “Men” means all men, including transmen.

    • Terms like “people with [vaginas, penises, breasts, etc.]” or “pregnant people” or “people who menstruate” may be used when those physical sex traits are relevant to the discussion. (Clothes go on our physical bodies, so the way we talk about our bodies matters!)

    • “Non-Binary” refers to people who exist outside of the gender binary (*including those who identify as agender, bigender, genderqueer, or genderfluid).

    • “Women’s clothing” and “men’s clothing” refers to clothing that would likely be found in that section of a department store, or that was historically worn by people who identified as women or men, respectively. (But how you identify doesn’t limit your fashion choices in any way!)
